Sooner or later, the Kansas City Chiefs might be forced into a decision they did not plan on making. Kicker Harrison Butker’s sexist commencement speech at a Catholic college has sparked outrage from around the sports world, as many fans and analysts have blasted Butker for espousing archaic views on the role of women in modern society. There has even been a petition making the rounds that is calling for the Chiefs to waive Butker and acquire a new kicker.

The Butker blowback could contribute to an uneasy atmosphere at organized team activities and in training camp later this summer, as the Chiefs prepare for a run at a third consecutive Super Bowl title. As Kansas City fights for a date with NFL history, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid will be keen to keep distractions to a minimum.

Butker’s remarks at Benedictine College in Kansas on May 11 are still being heavily-scrutinized and widely-panned. The latest missive toward the Chiefs’ kicker comes from former ESPN host Michelle Beadle, on her “Over the Top” podcast.

Beadle and co-host Peter Rosenberg dove into Butker’s remarks during the latest episode of their podcast, where Beadle indicated that “everything Butker said was garbage” and pointed to the fact that women were in the audience to hear Butker put them down.

The NFL has distanced itself from Butker’s sexist speech, while Mahomes on Wednesday made it clear that he disagreed with his kicker on “certain things” that he said at Benedictine College — although the star quarterback still believes Butker is a “good person.”
