Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union and a pivotal figure in ending the Cold War, has died at the age of 91. The influential leader passed away on August 30, 2022, in Moscow after a long illness, according to reports from Russian state media.
Gorbachev rose to power in 1985 and is best known for his groundbreaking reforms—perestroika (economic restructuring) and glasnost (political openness)—which helped transform Soviet society and ease tensions with the West. His leadership ultimately led to the peaceful dissolution of the USSR in 1991.
World leaders have expressed condolences, hailing him as a visionary who changed the course of history. Gorbachev will be laid to rest at Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery, beside his beloved wife, Ruaisa.
