Exclusive:Travis Kelce Snubs Chance to Meet Harry and Meghan After Encounter with Prince William
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce reportedly passed up an opportunity to meet Prince Harry by choosing not to attend the ESPY Awards. Reports suggest that Kelce was invited to the prestigious event where his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, was nominated for the Best Team award. However, ESPN did not list him as one of the guests before the show, and he indeed chose not to attend.
Kelce’s decision to skip the ESPYs came just weeks after he had a memorable encounter with Prince William at a Taylor Swift concert in London. On his ‘New Heights’ podcast, Kelce spoke about the unexpected meeting with William, describing the prince as “the coolest mother——. He was awesome. He was so cool.” Kelce also shared that he was unsure of the proper etiquette, wondering if he should bow or curtsy, but ultimately settled for a handshake after being told it wasn’t an official royal event.
The Taylor Swift concert on June 21 turned out to be a delightful experience for Kelce, as he got to meet Prince William and his two eldest children, Charlotte and George. The moment was captured in a selfie, which Kelce proudly shared on social media. Swift herself joined in the celebration, posting, “Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start.” The Prince and Princess of Wales also tweeted their appreciation: “Thank you Taylor Swift for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErasTour.”
While Kelce enjoyed his time with Prince William, the ESPY Awards presented a different scenario. Prince Harry was there to receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service, and his presence, along with his wife Meghan Markle, created a buzz of anticipation. Kelce’s absence meant he missed out on a potential meeting with Harry, which could have been intriguing given Kelce’s recent positive interaction with William.
Kelce’s teammate, Patrick Mahomes, also decided to skip the ESPYs, despite being named Best Athlete in Men’s Sports. The award was collected by head coach Andy Reid, while Mahomes’ mother, Randi, and sister, Mia Randall, attended on his behalf. They had the opportunity to mingle with royalty, taking a picture with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
During the ceremony, Serena Williams, who hosted the event, made a playful reference to Kelce during her opening monologue: “Patrick Mahomes and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend won a Super Bowl.” This light-hearted comment highlighted Kelce’s significant presence in the sports world, even in his absence.
